This is really a retention strategy disguised as product expansion. Perplexity already won early growth by answering hard web questions better than standard search, but that edge is getting copied by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft. Going deeper in finance and shopping is how it turns occasional search into repeat workflows, where users check markets, compare products, and sometimes complete purchases without leaving the app.
