Benefits providers, B2B fintechs, and HR software use Finch to read company wide payroll and HR records, then write deductions or contributions back into payroll. A 401(k) provider, for example, can enroll employees and move contributions without CSV files and manual ops teams.

• The walled garden exists because the market is deeply fragmented and technically old. Finch describes roughly 6,000 HR and payroll systems in the U.S., many still moving sensitive data through CSVs, SFTP, and file feeds. Even large vendors often contain many separate underlying systems, so one partnership does not mean one clean connection.

Going forward, the winners in payroll infrastructure will be the companies that turn raw access into higher value workflows. The connector itself gets less differentiated over time. The durable value comes from making payroll data actionable for underwriting, benefits enrollment, direct deposit switching, and other products that sit directly in the flow of money and employment.
