This dependence makes Human Interest more like an app inside payroll than a standalone retirement seller. The real product is not just a 401(k) plan, it is automated deduction setup, eligibility tracking, contribution syncing, and compliance work that all start with payroll data. That is why payroll partners matter twice, once as a referral channel and again as the system Human Interest has to plug into to make the plan actually run.

  • The integration work is substantial. Human Interest built roughly 40 to 50 payroll connectors internally, which still covered only about 60% of its customer base, and more than 100 operations staff were still doing manual data work in the background. That shows why direct payroll access is a core capability, not a nice to have.
  • This is also the main distribution pattern across digital 401(k)s. Guideline describes payroll platforms like Gusto and Rippling as its largest channel because pay stubs provide the clean read and write data needed to manage deductions and reversals. Human Interest scaled the same way, reaching over 1M participants and 20,000 plus businesses through 400 plus payroll integrations.
  • The risk is that payroll platforms can turn from partner to owner of the category. Gusto moved from integrating with outside 401(k) providers to launching Gusto 401(k) powered by Guideline after acquiring Guideline in November 2025. That is the clearest example of how a distribution partner can decide retirement is important enough to bundle natively.

The next phase is deeper embedding, where payroll systems do not just pass data to a retirement provider but present retirement inside their own product. Human Interest is already building for that with Fabric, its white label platform for payroll and financial partners. That should expand distribution, but it also makes control of the payroll surface area even more decisive.
