How AI is transforming productivity apps
The real moat in AI productivity is not calling a frontier model, it is owning the feedback loop that turns usage into a better product. Public APIs let a startup ship a useful writing, tagging, or summarization feature fast, but user corrections usually do not change the base model automatically. That means the product only improves if the company builds its own evals, prompt systems, retrieval layer, or fine tuning workflow on top.

The panel makes the split concrete. Double found APIs were great for drafting text and classifying tasks, but weak at execution and numerical judgment. The bottleneck became better inputs, better context, and better product design, not just better access to a model endpoint.

This is why specialized stacks emerge after the first API wave. In coding, Anthropic pushed Claude Code as a direct product partly because owning the interface and usage data creates a tighter improvement loop than being only a model supplier behind someone else's app.

The infrastructure market exists for the same reason. As companies move beyond simple API calls, they start mixing models, custom tuning, monitoring, and deployment tooling. That is the point where AI features stop being a thin wrapper and start becoming a system that can actually compound learning.
The next phase of productivity software will separate fast followers from durable winners by who can turn user behavior into proprietary workflows, datasets, and model adaptations. The apps that keep relying on the same public endpoints will converge toward similar features, while the apps that build closed loop improvement systems will widen the gap over time.
