Ripple's lower-cost solution could help banks in these regions leapfrog traditional correspondent banking relationships

The real advantage is not just cheaper transfers, it is removing the need for a small bank to keep money parked across multiple foreign banks just to send an international payment. RippleNet lets banks pre-check payment details, lock FX, and settle in seconds, while On-Demand Liquidity can use XRP instead of pre-funded accounts. That matters most in markets where correspondent links are sparse, expensive, or unreliable, and where dollar access is already a bottleneck.

  • Traditional cross-border banking works through chained correspondent banks and nostro or vostro accounts. That means a local bank often needs multiple foreign partners and trapped liquidity. Ripple’s pitch is that a bank can connect to one network and reach more corridors without building that account web first.
  • The strongest comparable is stablecoin infrastructure. In emerging markets, businesses already use USDC and USDT to bypass slow SWIFT and weak FX access, especially where local banks cannot easily access dollar liquidity. Ripple is solving the same pain from the bank side, with software plus optional crypto liquidity.
  • This also explains why emerging markets can matter more than major corridors. In the US and Europe, incumbent rails are entrenched. In smaller markets, the old system is already broken enough that faster settlement, lower prefunding needs, and better network reach can be a step change, not just an incremental upgrade.

The next phase is a race to become the default cross-border layer for institutions outside the core banking markets. Ripple is pushing from the bank and payment provider side, while Circle and other stablecoin networks are pushing from the digital dollar side. The winners will be the networks that combine liquidity, compliance, and local off-ramp coverage into a system banks can plug into immediately.
