Gusto is turning payroll from a once a month back office task into a daily employee money hub. Once workers already open Gusto to see pay stubs, benefits, and tax forms, Gusto can add wallet, faster pay access, cards, and retirement products without needing a separate customer acquisition loop. That moves it beyond selling software to employers and toward monetizing the flow of wages and savings on both sides of the payroll relationship.

  • The key product shift is from employer workflow to employee balance sheet. Gusto Wallet added deposits, cards, and interest bearing accounts, and newer Gusto Money products now sit next to payroll, bill pay, invoicing, and instant pay. In 2024, Gusto Money grew 140% year over year, faster than the core business.
  • This follows the same playbook seen in contractor payroll and neobanks. The winning product is usually the one that shortens time to money, because faster access to wages creates habitual usage and opens room for interchange, instant transfer fees, lending, and other financial products. Earned wage access is one concrete example of that monetization layer.

Gusto, Rippling, and Deel have all moved from payroll software toward app stores for HR, benefits, and finance, because payroll is the system of record and the funding rail. That gives Gusto an SMB specific advantage, since it already owns the paycheck touchpoint for hundreds of thousands of small businesses.

From here, the highest value payroll companies will look less like pure software vendors and more like regulated distribution platforms for employee finance. The next leg is deeper attachment of retirement, compliance, banking, and instant liquidity products, which should raise revenue per employer and per worker without requiring Gusto to move far from the payroll data and cash flows it already controls.
