Photoroom, it's a great product, and it shows us vividly how much Adobe misses multiple opportunities

The strategic point is that Photoroom proves a narrowly focused tool can beat a broad creative suite when it removes friction from one high frequency job. Photoroom built around a seller taking a product photo, deleting the background in one tap, adding a clean scene, and publishing faster. Adobe Express offers many of the same surface features, but as part of a wider app for graphics, posts, flyers, and templates, which leaves room for a specialist to win on speed, mobile workflow, and output quality.

  • Photoroom started with marketplace sellers on eBay, Depop, and Poshmark, then grew by making one repeated task feel instant on mobile. That focus helped it reach $65M ARR by March 2024, with 14M MAUs and 88% of traffic from iOS and Android, which is very different from desktop first creative suites.
  • Adobe Express clearly competes in background removal. Adobe markets one click image background removal, transparent export, continued editing, templates, and publishing inside Express. That overlap is exactly why Photoroom matters as a signal, it won in a use case Adobe already touched, rather than inventing a wholly separate category.
  • Photoroom also expanded beyond prosumer subscriptions into an API for marketplaces and content heavy businesses. In practice that means product photos can be cleaned, resized, branded, and sent back into a merchant catalog automatically. That is a more workflow embedded business than a simple design app subscription.

The next step is more specialist AI tools turning a single creative task into a system of record for commerce and marketing workflows. As image and video editing become more automated, the winners are likely to be products that hide model complexity, fit directly into daily production loops, and then move from seat based SaaS into APIs and full workflow orchestration.
