Native warehouse exports attack the most expensive part of Airbyte’s business first, not the whole product. Connectors for systems like Stripe handle dense transaction data that customers sync constantly, so they create outsized usage revenue. When the source vendor ships its own pipeline, the customer gets a connector built by the company that owns the API, and Airbyte loses the connector with the highest volume and the strongest willingness to pay.

  • Airbyte wins on breadth. It was built for the long tail, with community built connectors and a CDK for customers to make their own. That works well for niche tools, but it is weaker where a few head connectors matter most and where reliability at scale is the buying criterion.
  • Native exports are attractive to vendors because the data already lives on their servers. They can package setup inside their own product, tune the schema for common customer analyses, and keep the revenue. Stripe sells Data Pipeline on a per transaction basis, and tools like Prequel exist just to help SaaS vendors launch this SKU.
  • This does not eliminate third party ETL. Salesforce’s warehouse connectivity sits inside Data Cloud and zero copy workflows, not as a universal replacement for every SaaS sync. The durable need is still joining raw data across many apps, which is why horizontal tools remain useful even as first party exports peel away the biggest single source connectors.

The market is moving toward a split structure. Big SaaS platforms will own export for their own data, while Airbyte’s best path is to own the fragmented middle and long tail, then add monitoring, governance, and workflow tools that sit above many pipelines. In that world, the connector alone matters less than being the control layer for everything that is not natively covered.
