Airwallex Monetizes Spend and Embedded Finance
Airwallex
EBITDA profitability shows Airwallex is no longer just winning on cheap cross-border FX, it is getting paid for becoming the day to day money system for global businesses. The mix shift matters because cards, domestic payments, treasury accounts, and embedded accounts turn one off transfers into repeat software like usage. That creates steadier gross profit and spreads infrastructure costs across more customer workflows.1 2 3 4
- Spend management is higher quality revenue because the customer uses Airwallex every time an employee swipes a card, submits an expense, or gets reimbursed across entities and currencies. By March 2025, cards and payments were already over 50% of gross profit, showing margin expansion was tied to product mix, not just volume growth.1 2
- Embedded finance adds a second engine. Platforms plug Airwallex into their own product so end users can open connected accounts, move funds, issue cards, and run payouts without leaving the platform. Airwallex said it ended Q4 2025 with 234,000 transacting connected accounts, up 149% year over year, which points to rising usage without matching sales expense.3 5
- This is also why Airwallex looks more like Ant International than Wise or Payoneer. Wise and Payoneer are strongest when a customer mainly needs cheaper cross-border movement or marketplace payouts. Airwallex and Ant both try to own the broader operating stack, including acceptance, accounts, cards, FX, treasury, and embedded infrastructure, where monetization compounds as more workflows land on one system.4 6 7
From here, the path is to deepen wallet share inside existing customers rather than just add new payment volume. As billing, acquiring, treasury, and embedded accounts mature, Airwallex can keep shifting revenue toward products that behave more like financial software and less like transactional FX, which should widen the gap with single lane payment providers.3 4 8
