This move pushes Back Market from being a place that sells refurbished devices into being the front door for the whole device lifespan. Instead of only making money when someone buys a phone every few years, it can now capture repair demand the moment a screen cracks, a battery fades, or a camera fails. Opening the service to any consumer, not just marketplace buyers, turns repair into a customer acquisition channel, a subscription product, and a way to feed more devices back into resale and trade in.

  • The economics are different from the core marketplace. Back Market usually takes commissions and fees while refurbishers hold inventory and ship devices. Repair adds a service layer on top, with Evy powering booking and fulfillment, and the planned €6.99 per month subscription creating recurring revenue between device purchases.
  • This also broadens who Back Market competes with. Its older rivals were resale marketplaces like Swappie, or looser channels like eBay and Amazon Renewed. A consumer repair platform puts it closer to local repair shops, carrier stores, and retailer service counters that already handle cracked screens, diagnostics, and trade ins in person.
  • The strategic prize is supply. Back Market already faces tight inventory because premium used devices are scarce and many trade ins go straight to OEMs, carriers, or retailers. Repair gives the company another touchpoint before disposal, which can improve trade in conversion and keep more devices circulating inside its network of 2,700 vetted refurbishers.

The next step is for repair to become the operating system around Back Market's resale marketplace. If the company can combine repair booking, how to guides from iFixit, subscriptions, trade ins, and physical service points, it can build a higher frequency relationship than resale alone and make itself harder to displace in refurbished electronics.
