Company Report
Airwallex has entered the subscription management, usage-based billing, and payment orchestration market through its acquisition of OpenPay

This acquisition pushes Airwallex up the software stack from moving money to helping customers run the revenue engine that creates the payment in the first place. Instead of only processing a charge, Airwallex can now handle plan setup, usage based invoicing, recurring collections, failed payment retries, and routing a transaction to the best processor, which makes it harder for a customer to swap Airwallex out of their workflow.1 2 3 4

  • OpenPay gave Airwallex three concrete layers at once, subscription management, payment orchestration, and revenue analytics. Airwallex said the acquisition would add billing to its suite, and its current API docs now show live subscription objects, recurring charges, and retry logic for failed payments.1 2 3
  • Payment orchestration matters when a merchant uses more than one processor. Primer shows the standard workflow, a single integration, rules that send different transactions to different PSPs, and automatic failover if one provider goes down. Airwallex can now offer more of that control inside its own stack.4 5
  • The move fits Airwallex's broader expansion from cross border payments into a larger finance platform. Airwallex reached about $130B in transaction volume and $700M annualized revenue by March 2025, with cards and payments driving over half of gross profit, so billing adds a higher stickiness software layer on top of an already scaled payments base.6 7

The next step is for Airwallex to bundle billing, payments, cards, payouts, and later credit into one operating system for global internet businesses. If execution holds, the company shifts from being a cheaper way to move money across borders to being the system that records who owes what, collects it, and decides how the funds move after collection.1 6 7
