Deepgram as underlying voice infrastructure
Deepgram
Deepgram is becoming the picks and shovels layer of the voice AI boom. The pattern across Decagon, Sierra, Vapi, and Granola shows that very different products, customer support agents, voice agent builders, and meeting software, are all buying the same core speech infrastructure instead of training their own models. That gives Deepgram volume growth from many fronts at once, and lets it monetize both more audio and more pieces of each voice workflow.1 2 3 4 5
- Vapi makes this dependency especially concrete. Its product is an orchestration layer that wires together a transcriber, an LLM, and a voice model, and it explicitly supports bring your own providers like Deepgram. Vapi charges its own per minute platform fee on top of those underlying model costs, so Deepgram can win even when another company owns the customer relationship.2 6
- The customer set spans both agent builders and end applications. Sierra and Decagon sell AI support agents that replace human support work, while Granola turns meetings into searchable notes and follow up workflows. That mix matters because it means Deepgram is not tied to one narrow use case like call centers alone. It sits underneath both enterprise voice automation and everyday productivity software.3 4 5 7 8
- This also explains why Deepgram moved from standalone transcription into a full stack with speech to text, text to speech, and a Voice Agent API. Once customers already trust it for the live transcript, Deepgram can sell the next layer up, including turn taking and speech generation, instead of letting value accrue only to app companies like Vapi or agent vendors like Sierra.1 2 6
The next leg is deeper bundling. As more voice products try to reduce latency, lower provider sprawl, and improve gross margins, more of them will buy a larger share of the stack from one vendor. If Deepgram keeps winning inside fast growing products upstream, it can compound from commodity transcription API into the default infrastructure layer for real time voice software.1 2 6
