Payoneer is the scaled aggregator in this market, while Airwallex is the high volume operating system. Payoneer moves similar annual volume with far more customers, but its footprint comes from serving millions of smaller sellers, freelancers, and marketplace users, whereas Airwallex handles about $1M per customer by owning the primary business account, FX, cards, and embedded payments stack for heavier cross border operators.

  • The customer shapes are completely different. Airwallex had about 100,000 customers and $100B in volume as of July 2024, or roughly $1M per customer. Payoneer processed $80.1B in 2024 across 2 million active ICPs, customers averaging over $500 per month, which implies a much longer tail base and much lower volume density.
  • Payoneer grew up as a payout wallet for marketplace sellers and service exporters, then added cards, checkout, and working capital. Its own filings break out SMBs selling on marketplaces, B2B SMBs, and checkout as core channels. Airwallex started from cheap bank transfer FX, then expanded into business accounts, cards, and API led infrastructure used by firms like Brex and Rippling.
  • That difference shows up in growth and monetization. Payoneer reached $952M annualized revenue on $75B volume in mid 2024, with 16% revenue growth. Airwallex hit a $500M revenue run rate on $100B volume in July 2024, then about $700M annualized revenue and $130B volume by March 2025, with over 50% of gross profit coming from cards and payments products in the US and Europe.

The market is shifting toward fewer vendors that both move money and run the workflow around it. Payoneer is pushing upmarket through B2B SMB and checkout, while Airwallex is pushing west and deeper into embedded finance. The winner will be the platform that becomes the default account layer for cross border businesses, not just the cheapest way to send a payout.
