Slope provides immediate duty financing
Slope
This matters because Slope is moving from financing invoices after a shipment arrives to financing a cash obligation that hits before goods can clear customs. For importers, duty payments are often due within 10 working days after entry, while inventory may still be on the water or not yet sold, so Slope is funding a gap that directly blocks goods movement and ties up working capital. That makes the product part payments platform, part trade finance rail.
-
The workflow is concrete. A buyer places an overseas order, goods ship, customs duties come due near arrival, Slope fronts that payment, and the importer repays on net terms later. Slope already underwrites buyers in real time, pays merchants immediately, and carries the float with debt facilities, so duty finance extends an existing lending motion into the import process.
-
This is different from older trade finance and adjacent logistics platforms. Tradeshift uses invoice and payment data to offer supplier finance after invoices exist. Flexport bundles freight forwarding with trade finance and customs workflows. Slope is narrower and faster, embedding credit directly into checkout, ERP, and order-to-cash systems where a finance team can approve and fund a trade obligation without leaving its core workflow.
-
The opportunity is real because tariff pressure has already changed customer behavior. Tariff related financing applications on Slope rose 730% year over year, and J.P. Morgan backed the company with $65M in new equity and debt in July 2024 while exposing it to treasury and trade finance distribution. That combination gives Slope both lending capacity and a channel into larger import heavy accounts.
The next step is for duty financing to become one module in a broader import operating stack. As Slope plugs its underwriting and payment rails into banks, ERPs, and cross border workflows, it can fund duties, supplier invoices, and receivables from the same data stream, turning trade finance from a slow specialist product into a built in feature of B2B commerce software.
