Airwallex Australia China payment wedge

Airwallex

Company Report
using cheap cross-border payments between Australia and China as a hook to capture SMBs' business banking accounts

This was a classic wedge strategy, win the painful money movement workflow first, then turn that daily payment relationship into the company’s primary finance console. Airwallex started with importers moving funds between Australia and China, where bank FX spreads and transfer fees were especially visible, then layered in multi currency balances, local receiving accounts, cards, and bill pay so the same customer could keep funds, spend them, and route more of its business through Airwallex.1 2 3 4 5

  • The initial product solved a very specific pain. Australian SMBs buying inventory from China were paying remittance providers and banks large FX markups. Airwallex used local bank rails to undercut legacy B2B FX providers by 50% to 80%, while taking a thin 0.2% margin and using that low cost lane to acquire operating accounts.1 2
  • The account grab mattered because payments alone are low margin and episodic. Once a business holds balances in Airwallex, it can receive local bank details in 20 plus currencies, send transfers to 150 plus countries, issue employee cards, and auto convert balances at spend time. That makes Airwallex part of the company’s everyday cash workflow, not just a one off transfer tool.1 3 4 5
  • Compared with Wise Business and Payoneer, Airwallex has skewed toward higher volume customers and a broader bundle. By July 2024 it had about 100,000 customers doing roughly $1M in volume each, versus Wise Business at about $66K and Payoneer at about $15K per customer, which helps explain why Airwallex moved from the payment wedge into software like cards and embedded finance.1 6 7 8

The next step is deeper replacement of the business bank account. As more customers use Airwallex to collect funds, pay suppliers, reimburse employees, and issue cards across markets, the company gets more payment volume inside its own network and more reasons to own the full operating balance, which pushes it closer to being the global SMB treasury layer rather than just a cheaper FX tool.2 3 4 5
