Once backup is delivered as software instead of a box in the data center, companies like Rubrik can land customers with lower upfront spend, protect newer cloud workloads like Microsoft 365, and then add higher value products such as ransomware response, sensitive data discovery, and governance. That is why SaaS changes both the shape of revenue and the size of the market these vendors can pursue.

Instead of purchasing a large appliance upfront, customers sign multi year subscriptions priced to backed up data, then bolt on features like Microsoft 365 protection, ransomware investigation, and governance. That makes it easier to win cloud first workloads and expand account spend over time.

The clearest proof that SaaS opens new markets is customer mix. Commvault reported that 60% of new SaaS customers in Q1 2022 were net new logos, and more than half also used other Commvault products. SaaS is functioning as both a customer acquisition wedge and a cross sell engine across the category.

This is also why backup vendors are moving into security and compliance. Backup data gives Rubrik visibility into files, access patterns, and recovery history across SaaS apps, VMs, and cloud instances. That same data can support products that look more like BigID style data security or broader cyber workflows than legacy backup software.
The next phase is category convergence. Backup, cyber recovery, data security, and compliance are being bundled into one subscription stack, and the vendors that own the backup workflow will keep pushing outward into larger software budgets. SaaS is the delivery model that makes that bundling possible and makes expansion revenue repeatable.
