BetterUp fundamentally allows companies to extend learning & development opportunities to many more people inside the organization

BetterUp turns executive coaching from a scarce perk for senior leaders into a repeatable software budget line that can cover much larger employee populations. Instead of paying thousands of dollars for a single outside session, companies buy ongoing access to coaching, scheduling, assessments, and content in one product. That changes L&D from occasional intervention to a recurring program that HR teams can roll out across managers, frontline groups, and specific employee cohorts.

  • The product is built like a coaching operating system, not a speaker bureau. Employees complete an intake, get matched with a coach, schedule sessions in the app, message between meetings, and use guided content. That workflow makes 1:1 development administratively manageable at enterprise scale.
  • BetterUp widened the market by offering lower intensity formats alongside classic 1:1 coaching. The Walmart caregiver product used live group coaching, community support, and on demand exercises, showing how the company can serve populations that would never receive traditional executive coaching packages.
  • This scale advantage is the core competitive moat. BetterUp reports 3,000 plus coaches, 600 organizations, and broader distribution through Salesforce and other partners, while competitors like CoachHub are the closest comparable but remain more regionally concentrated. The more coaching is packaged into existing HR and workflow systems, the easier broad deployment becomes.

The next step is moving from coaching for selected employees to development embedded in daily work. BetterUp is already adding AI practice, Slack and Teams delivery, and platform partnerships, which should push coaching down market from leaders to every manager, seller, caregiver, and frontline employee who can benefit from structured feedback and support.
