After Nutanix (NASDAQ: NTNX) built a $240M/year business (now $2B) selling a hardware and software bundle for running virtual machines, Lightspeed partner and Nutanix investor Bipul Sinha started Rubrik to apply the same pattern of product-market fit to data backups.

Rubrik worked because it turned backup buying from a custom integration project into an appliance purchase. Nutanix had already shown that infrastructure teams would pay for one box, one contract, and one support number if it removed the work of stitching together servers, storage, and virtualization software. Bipul Sinha took that same playbook into backup, where admins were still juggling backup software, storage gear, and tape workflows across long, expensive contracts.

  • Nutanix proved the distribution pattern first. By fiscal 2016 it had reached roughly $445M in revenue selling hyperconverged systems that bundled hardware and software into a simpler on premises package for virtualized workloads. That made the model legible before Rubrik applied it to backups.
  • Rubrik’s early product was literally an all in one backup appliance placed beside a company’s existing servers. Instead of buying backup software from one vendor, storage from another, and services to connect them, IT teams bought one bundled system at one inclusive price, then added maintenance and services.
  • The deeper similarity is the wedge. Nutanix used the appliance to get control of core compute infrastructure. Rubrik used the appliance to get control of protected data, then later shifted that installed base toward cloud subscriptions, ransomware recovery, and broader data security, much as Veeam and others moved up the stack.

The next step in this market is less about selling another box and more about owning the system a company trusts to restore clean data after an attack. That favors vendors like Rubrik that started with a sticky appliance wedge, then converted that position into software subscriptions and higher value security products around the backup estate.
