A $2M price point made Cerebras less like a normal chip vendor and more like a seller of bespoke supercomputers to institutions with public budgets. In practice, that meant a tiny buyer pool, mainly national labs running protein folding, climate, and molecular dynamics jobs where cutting training from weeks to minutes justified a multimillion dollar purchase. That also helps explain why early growth depended on a few very large customers rather than broad enterprise adoption.

  • The real alternative was not buying a single Nvidia GPU, it was buying and managing a cluster of hundreds of GPUs plus the networking, power, and engineering overhead to keep that cluster busy. Cerebras won when a lab had one massive model that fit its wafer scale design better than a conventional cluster.
  • That customer mix naturally skewed toward state backed labs like Argonne and Livermore. These buyers could fund frontier compute for science workloads, but they came with long procurement cycles and a small global market, which capped how far hardware alone could scale.
  • The later shift to cloud inference changed the constraint. Instead of asking customers to spend millions up front on hardware, Cerebras could sell tokens over an API to startups and enterprises like Perplexity, Notion, Windsurf, and Cognition, which is a much wider market with faster sales motion.

The path forward is moving the company from rare, high ticket hardware deals into repeat usage revenue. If Cerebras keeps packaging its speed advantage as a cloud service instead of a capital purchase, it can turn a product once reserved for government labs into infrastructure that far more software companies can buy every day.
