In large enterprise deals, the hard part is not getting 10 standard fields through a common API. It is handling custom schemas, tenant by tenant configuration, bulk writes, retries, permissions, and rate limits inside systems like Salesforce. That pushes evaluation toward tools that act like infrastructure, not lightweight pass through connectors.

The product turns per customer code into configuration, lets RevOps or admins map fields themselves, and adds object and field level logs so engineering can see exactly what broke and why.

That is different from unified API vendors like Merge and Finch, which standardize the most common fields into one model. That works best when the job is broad coverage and light normalization, especially in categories like HR. It breaks down faster when each enterprise customer protects its own schema and wants custom objects, custom permissions, and custom workflows preserved.

The practical reason depth matters is operational. Salesforce enforces API request limits, and large customers often have multiple tools competing for the same quota. Ampersand is positioning around that maintenance burden, while embedded integration platforms like Paragon emphasize quickly shipping in app connectors and configuration flows across many integrations.
The market is moving toward a split. Breadth first platforms will keep winning simple, standardized use cases, while depth first infrastructure will win the high ACV enterprise layer where integrations decide whether a product can close and keep a seven figure account. As AI pushes software vendors upmarket faster, that deeper layer should become a larger budget line and a more durable wedge.
