Platform Bundling Threat to dbt

This risk is really about control of the daily workflow. dbt wins when a team wants one place to define business logic that works across Snowflake, Databricks, and BI tools, but that advantage shrinks if the warehouse itself now lets users write, run, schedule, monitor, and govern transformations inside the same console where the data already lives. At that point, buying decisions shift from best tool to fewest moving parts.

dbt Core became valuable because analysts and analytics engineers could write SQL models, tests, docs, and metrics definitions once, then run them against different warehouses. That matters most in large companies using more than one warehouse or more than one BI tool, because recreating the same logic in each system is slow and brittle.

The bundling threat is no longer theoretical. Snowflake now offers dbt projects inside Snowflake Workspaces, where teams can build, run, and monitor dbt pipelines with Git integration and AI coding help. Databricks is pushing Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines with an IDE like editor, scheduling, previews, dependency tracking, and pipeline operations built into its platform.

That is why dbt has been moving beyond a simple transformation runner into a broader data control plane. It is adding orchestration, cataloging, observability, semantic layer, and more analyst friendly interfaces, because a standalone transformation layer is easier for the warehouse vendors to absorb than a workflow system that sits above multiple clouds.
The next phase is a race between platform bundling and cross cloud coordination. If enterprises keep consolidating on one data platform, bundled transformation features will get stronger. If they keep running multi cloud estates and want shared business logic, metadata, and governance above the warehouse, dbt has room to become the control plane that connects the stack instead of one more tool inside it.
