Microsoft Partnership Fuels Rubrik Growth
Rubrik
This product is growing fastest because it turns Rubrik from a backup vendor into a default add on for the most widely deployed office software in the enterprise. Once Microsoft put sales support, product integration, and capital behind the relationship in August 2021, Rubrik could sell Microsoft 365 protection into a huge installed base that already needed backup, ransomware recovery, and compliance for Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and later Entra ID.
-
The August 17, 2021 agreement was not just a logo partnership. It included Microsoft investing in Rubrik, joint go to market work, and co engineering around Azure and Microsoft 365, which gave Rubrik both distribution and product credibility inside enterprise Microsoft accounts.
-
Microsoft 365 is a natural SaaS wedge because the buyer is already living in the Microsoft admin console and has a simple problem to solve, protect email, files, chats, and identity data that Microsoft does not fully retain for every recovery need. Rubrik then expands from that foothold into broader SaaS, cloud, and cyber recovery workloads.
-
This pattern matches the category shift. Commvault also saw SaaS bring in net new customers, while competitors like Druva, Veeam, and AvePoint built dedicated Microsoft 365 products or positioning. The market is moving from backup as infrastructure plumbing to backup as a cloud security control with cross sell potential.
Going forward, Microsoft centered protection should keep being one of Rubrik’s best entry points into large enterprises because it is easy to explain, urgent when ransomware hits, and adjacent to higher value security products. The more Rubrik becomes part of Microsoft recovery workflows, the more its SaaS business compounds through expansion rather than one time appliance sales.
