AI as Productivity Infrastructure
How AI is transforming productivity apps
The key implication is that AI in productivity is becoming base infrastructure, not just a feature. In practice, that means the winning products are less the ones that bolt a chatbot onto a doc, and more the ones that turn AI into a new layer for search, writing, meeting capture, task routing, and execution inside everyday work tools. That is why founders in the panel talk about AI as a broad enabling technology, while still insisting that each real workflow needs product design, context, and human oversight.

The panel makes a clear distinction between general model capability and usable software. Heyday, Double, and Taskade all describe the same pattern, raw models are good at drafting, summarizing, and organizing text, but they still need structured context, prompts, workflow rules, and often a human reviewer before users trust the output in real work.
-
The broader market has moved in that direction. Notion folded AI deeper into its core product with meeting notes and enterprise search across tools like Slack, Google Drive, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive. ClickUp now sells multiple AI add ons, from Brain AI to usage priced credits for agents and automation. AI is being packaged like a new operating layer for work software.
-
This also explains why AI startups are pressured to specialize. Once basic writing and summarization become standard inside suites like Notion, ClickUp, Microsoft, and Google, stand alone apps have to own a sharper workflow, unique context, or a human plus software service model. Otherwise the core feature gets absorbed by the incumbent product where the user already works.
Going forward, productivity software will split into two layers. Horizontal suites will absorb generic AI tasks, and specialized products will survive by owning proprietary context, trusted workflows, and higher stakes execution. The companies that win will make AI feel less like a demo and more like electricity inside the tool people already open every day.
