iCapital Targets AML/KYC Chokepoint via Family Offices
Managing Director at iCapital on the AML/KYC chokepoint in private markets
Family offices matter here because they are where iCapital can sell more data, reporting, and workflow without relying only on feeder funds. Family offices own messy portfolios across private funds, direct deals, trusts, and multiple custodians, so they need one place to aggregate statements, track exposure, and handle subscriptions. That fits iCapital’s push beyond conduit administration, especially after adding Mirador’s reporting and multi custody capabilities.

Addepar shows why this segment is attractive. It started with family offices that needed a dashboard for public and private assets in one view, then expanded into RIAs. By 2024, about half of Addepar’s clients were RIAs, and its growth came from moving that family office style reporting stack into a broader advisor market.

iCapital and Addepar overlap mostly after the investment is made, in reporting, portfolio views, and data delivery. iCapital’s stronger wedge is earlier in the workflow, getting advisors and clients through eligibility, AML and KYC, subscriptions, feeder structures, capital calls, and document handling. In practice, iCapital can feed data into Addepar rather than replace it.

This also lines up with where private wealth is moving. As registered and semi liquid products spread, the value shifts from just running feeder funds to owning the software rails, research approvals, and data connections across advisors, asset managers, admins, and reporting systems. Family offices are a natural proving ground because their needs are high touch and data heavy.
The likely path is that family office services become less of a side niche and more of a bridge into a broader wealth operating system. If iCapital keeps layering reporting, data aggregation, and investor workflow onto its alternatives distribution base, it can move closer to the position Addepar built in portfolio reporting, while keeping the stronger transaction and servicing engine around private markets.
