n8n Open Source Acquisition Funnel
n8n
The open-source layer lets n8n turn product usage into sales without paying for a heavy outbound motion. Developers find it on GitHub, self host it for an internal workflow, then bring it into a team once shared access, support, governance, and enterprise controls matter. That is a very different funnel from Zapier, which scaled through search, or Workato, which scaled through partner and top down enterprise sales.
-
n8n already has the shape of a bottom up funnel at scale. It serves more than 230,000 active users across free and paid tiers, more than 3,000 enterprise customers, and about $40M ARR as of July 2025. The free self hosted product creates a large pool of technical evaluators before procurement gets involved.
-
The conversion path is concrete. A developer or technical operator installs n8n locally or self hosts it, builds workflows that connect APIs, databases, Slack, and internal tools, then pushes management to buy shared licenses and support once multiple teams depend on those workflows. Enterprise licenses are sold around collaboration and control, not initial discovery.
-
Open source also makes n8n cheaper to improve and easier to trust. Community users submit refinements and new integrations through GitHub, which expands the long tail connector library. For enterprise buyers, self hosting and license based use reduce lock in concerns compared with cloud only automation tools, especially in regulated or data residency sensitive environments.
Going forward, this funnel should make n8n stronger as automation shifts toward AI heavy and security sensitive workflows. The more workflows start inside engineering, IT, and operations teams, the more an open, self hostable product can land first and monetize later through cloud, enterprise licenses, and embedded use cases, while incumbents keep relying more on marketing scale or formal enterprise sales.
