The real limit on auto insurance savings is not better driving data, it is more expensive cars to fix. Telematics can help insurers spot safer drivers and price them a bit better, but newer vehicles also pack cameras, sensors, and calibration heavy parts that turn even a minor fender bender into a pricier claim. That is why better risk measurement does not automatically translate into a much lower bill for the consumer.

  • Usage based programs can produce meaningful discounts in some carrier programs, but those savings sit inside a broader pricing stack that still includes repair severity, state rules, credit, driving history, and carrier loss targets. Progressive says drivers who earn a Snapshot discount save $322 a year on average, showing telematics matters, but not enough to overpower the whole cost base.
  • Vehicle technology cuts some accidents, but it also makes each repair more technical. CCC says ADAS features are pushing up diagnostics and calibration work, with nearly 88% of DRP appraisals including scans and about 36% including calibrations in Q3 2025. More steps in the shop means more labor, more parts, and longer cycle times.
  • This helps explain why startups saw room to attack pricing for people penalized by crude proxies like credit history, immigrant status, or thin files. Marshmallow built around that gap in the UK, using international driving records and telematics to price immigrants more fairly, which is a different lever from simply lowering premiums through safer hardware in the car.

The next phase of auto insurance pricing will be less about headline discounts and more about separating good risks from bad ones with finer data while managing rising repair complexity. The winners will be carriers and distributors that can use telematics, claims data, and better segmentation to target profitable niches, even as the average cost to repair modern cars keeps climbing.
