Replit lacks business-grade DNS

Replit doesn't offer all of the DNS settings you would expect.

This limitation shows where Replit stops being an all in one business stack and turns back into an app builder. It can host the product and connect a domain, but once a company needs business grade email setup, branded login flows, and full DNS control, the workflow spills back out to a registrar or email provider. That is manageable for experienced operators, but it breaks the promise of a single dashboard for non technical founders.

  • The concrete gap is that Replit custom domains for external registrars are set up with A and TXT records, while the interview describes still needing outside DNS management for email deliverability settings like SPF and DKIM. In practice that means the app can go live on Replit, but the company still uses GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Cloudflare for the domain layer.
  • That fits Replit’s broader product shape. Its strength is keeping building, hosting, database, and deployment in one place so founders can ship fast, which is exactly why GenAIPI kept the whole stack there. But the more a live business needs boring infrastructure details like password reset emails, mail routing, and domain reputation, the more the edge cases matter.
  • Replit has already been moving to close this gap. In January 2025 it updated DNS record formatting, in July 2025 it added custom DNS records for purchased domains, and current domain purchasing docs list A, TXT, and MX support. The implication is that DNS is evolving from a weak spot into a monetizable add on that keeps more of the production stack inside Replit.

Going forward, the winning text to app platforms will not just generate software, they will own the last mile of production infrastructure. If Replit keeps filling in DNS, auth, and email setup, it gets closer to being the default operating system for non technical founders, not just the fastest place to generate version one.
