The company that captures memories at the moment they happen usually gets to become the main place users search, summarize, and act on them later. Wearable first products like Limitless and Plaud do not wait for a file upload or a saved recording. They create the raw memory stream automatically from meetings, calls, and in person conversations, which gives them the chance to become the default inbox for everything a person said and heard, while Clipto starts one layer lower as a powerful index for files that already exist.

  • Limitless showed the shape of the wedge. It moved from desktop recall into a pendant that recorded on and off screen conversations, because owning capture creates a larger archive than indexing a laptop after the fact. Even with only about $2.2M ARR and $1.3M in pendant sales in 2024, the strategic bet was to own the stream, not just the search box.
  • Plaud made that model more concrete at scale. Its devices record phone calls, office meetings, and field conversations, then push transcripts and summaries into tools like Notion, Google Drive, and Office 365. By March 2026, it had expanded from a MagSafe recorder into a wearable pin and desktop app, turning many capture points into one searchable archive.
  • Clipto is differentiated in almost the opposite direction. It runs locally, indexes retrospective media libraries, and gives folder level permissions instead of ambient always on recording. That is attractive for privacy sensitive users, but it also means another product can sit above it as the always collecting memory layer while Clipto remains the system for organizing and retrieving stored files.

The next step in this market is a split between capture layers and memory operating systems. If wearable products keep broadening from single devices into cross device archives, they can own the daily habit and route transcripts into downstream apps. Clipto is best positioned where users want local, permissioned memory infrastructure rather than an always listening front end.
