Clipto earns recurring revenue from Pro subscriptions for its transcription and media-memory platform. The plan costs $24.99 per month at standard pricing or $12.49 per month billed annually, with a $9.99 introductory first month and a seven-day free trial.

The subscription includes unlimited transcription, multimodal media search, speaker identification, people tagging, support for more than 99 languages, and access to advanced AI models. Clipto targets consumers and professionals through a self-serve product rather than enterprise sales contracts.

Clipto processes desktop indexing and retrieval on customer hardware, which reduces cloud-compute costs for large local media libraries. Its mobile and web products use cloud transcription and storage, creating a blended cost structure across the product suite.

Valuation & Funding

On August 31, 2026, Clipto closed a $15M all-equity round at a $250M post-money valuation. HSG (formerly Sequoia China) led the round, with participation from GL Ventures, EnvisionX Capital, Palm Drive Capital, Hans Tung, Lu Zhang, and 522 Ventures.

Before this round, Clipto raised approximately $20M across financings in 2025. Including the August 2026 round, tracked primary capital totals approximately $16.84M, though cumulative funding across all rounds may be higher given the 2025 financings.

Product

Clipto turns a user's audio, video, images, and documents into a searchable archive. Users point the application at folders on a Mac or Windows computer, and it indexes the files by transcribing speech, identifying speakers, recognizing people and scenes, segmenting topics, and tagging objects and actions. Queries such as "every customer who complained about onboarding" or "the drone shot where the car rounds the bend" return matching timestamps, clips, or document passages.

The desktop product is local-first: source files remain on the user's machine, indexing runs on-device, and search does not require uploading terabytes of footage to the cloud. It requires an Apple-silicon Mac with at least 16GB of memory or a Windows PC with at least 12GB (Windows is still in beta). By contrast, the mobile and web products upload recordings to Clipto's cloud for transcription and summarization, generating searchable transcripts with speaker labels, summaries, and action items that sync across devices.

In a typical creator workflow, the user selects local folders containing raw footage across multiple drives. Clipto builds a semantic index that users can search by meaning rather than filename, then lets them preview matching clips and export results to Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve through dedicated plugins. The workflow replaces manual logging, scrubbing, and labeling before an edit.

Clipto also supports MCP (Model Context Protocol), allowing external AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor to query approved portions of a user's local library. Clipto searches only permitted folders and returns structured evidence with timestamps and source links, without giving the external tool open-ended filesystem access. This makes Clipto a retrieval layer for third-party chatbots and agents.

Creators drove initial adoption, but by mid-2026 accounted for only about one-quarter to one-third of users. Other users include lawyers, doctors, researchers, marketers, HR professionals, professors, and students searching meeting recordings, interviews, earnings calls, lecture archives, and research documents. These workflows depend on finding and verifying specific moments across large media libraries rather than generating new content.

Business Model

Clipto sells B2C and prosumer subscriptions through its website and iOS and Android apps using a self-serve, product-led model. Users discover Clipto through SEO pages targeting queries such as "transcribe MP4" or "YouTube transcript generator," try a free tool or seven-day trial, and convert to a paid Pro plan. The annual plan at $150 per year collects cash upfront and extends commitments, while the $9.99 introductory month reduces the initial cost for monthly subscribers.

Desktop indexing and retrieval run on customer-owned hardware, limiting proportional cloud GPU expenses for locally processed video. Mobile and web recordings use cloud transcription and storage, while heavier workloads, including terabytes of local footage, run on the user's machine. This cost structure makes flat-rate unlimited pricing more viable than it would be for a cloud-only transcription service and likely contributes to Clipto's profitability at $15M ARR with just over 20 employees.

Acquisition comes from an affiliate program offering 50% commission on referred paying customers, hardware bundles such as the Hollyland microphone partnership, app-store distribution, and content marketing. Retention depends partly on accumulated user data: each imported file increases the memory's utility, cross-file connections improve over time, and switching requires a new provider to re-index the library. Unlimited seats, local compute economics, and accumulated user context can increase recurring revenue durability.

Competition

Clipto competes across three converging markets: cloud transcription and meeting intelligence, local media search and creator tools, and persistent personal memory. The competitive dynamic is vertical integration, as transcription, summarization, and semantic search become bundled features inside tools users already pay for.

Editing-suite incumbents

Adobe Premiere Pro now includes Media Intelligence, which uses on-device models to let editors search footage by spoken words, visual content, and metadata without leaving the timeline. Adobe says footage remains local and is not used for training, narrowing Clipto's privacy advantage. DaVinci Resolve followed a similar path with IntelliSearch in Resolve 21, adding visual search, face recognition, transcription, and speaker detection. Resolve's free edition makes it difficult for an external utility to charge creators solely for incremental search.

Clipto's Premiere and Resolve plugins let it coexist as the persistent archive layer feeding these editors, but both platforms are expanding from project-level search toward broader media intelligence.

Cloud transcription and meeting tools

Otter.ai is the most direct competitor for meeting, interview, and education workflows, with more than 25M users and over $100M in ARR. Its calendar-connected bots automatically join Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet, while its Business and Enterprise plans offer admin controls, SSO, CRM integrations, and optional HIPAA compliance, enterprise capabilities Clipto's consumer-oriented product currently lacks.

Fireflies.ai, Fathom, Avoma, and Read AI compete in the same meeting-notes market, while Granola has raised $43M to expand from meeting notes into searchable organizational knowledge. Clipto combines meeting context with local video, documents, and images in a single cross-format index, but Otter and its peers own the standardized corporate meeting workflow.

Personal memory and ambient capture

Limitless, the successor to Rewind, pairs a wearable pendant with cloud transcription to capture in-person conversations throughout the day. Rewind raised $15M at a $350M valuation in 2023 at roughly $707K ARR. Plaud and Sandbar's Stream similarly bundle capture hardware with software subscriptions.

These products create new memory streams automatically, while Clipto primarily indexes existing files. Clipto differentiates through retrospective archives, local processing, and deliberate folder-level permissions rather than ambient surveillance, but wearable-first competitors could own the top-level personal-memory interface.

Creator workflow platforms and infrastructure

Descript, estimated at $55M ARR in August 2025, turns transcripts into an editing interface and bundles recording, text-based editing, AI production, and publishing. VEED, estimated at $45M ARR in October 2024, and tools such as Loom, Wistia, Canva, and Vidyard bundle transcription with hosting, collaboration, and distribution.

On the infrastructure side, Deepgram, OpenAI Whisper, Mistral Voxtral (batch transcription at $0.003 per minute), and Speechmatics make high-quality speech recognition broadly accessible. MacWhisper offers local transcription on Mac for a one-time €64 lifetime license, undercutting Clipto's subscription pricing for users who only need private transcription.

Platform-level bundling

Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Apple, and Microsoft can provide native recording, transcription, summaries, and dictation inside products users already have. Microsoft and Google can bundle these capabilities into existing enterprise contracts at effectively zero incremental cost, while Apple and Google are improving free on-device voice features across their operating systems.

TAM Expansion

Clipto's expansion logic moves from a transcription utility toward a cross-format memory layer, broadening the addressable market from speech-to-text to personal knowledge management, enterprise search, digital asset management, and AI-agent infrastructure.

From transcription to persistent memory

Clipto's largest TAM expansion is the shift from point-solution transcription to a multimodal memory system spanning video, audio, images, documents, and meetings. Each imported file adds context for future searches and AI-generated answers, creating data gravity that transcription alone cannot produce. Potential extensions include timeline-based recall, recurring-topic detection, decision tracking, and proactive resurfacing of older material.

This shift moves Clipto beyond the crowded, increasingly commoditized speech-to-text market, where Mistral offers batch transcription at $0.003 per minute and platforms like Wistia include transcription at no incremental charge. Accumulated context and cross-file synthesis could support higher willingness to pay.

Enterprise and vertical expansion

Clipto began with video creators, but creators now represent only about one-quarter to one-third of users. Lawyers, doctors, researchers, analysts, and educators also use the product for workflows that require finding and verifying specific moments across large archives.

The next step is packaging individual subscriptions into team and enterprise products with shared libraries, role-based permissions, centralized billing, audit logs, retention controls, and compliance certifications. Local processing may appeal to organizations that cannot upload unpublished media, legal recordings, or internal meetings to third-party clouds. Vertical applications in legal discovery, financial research, healthcare documentation, and education could support higher contract values than current consumer pricing.

Agent memory infrastructure

MCP makes Clipto a potential local context layer for third-party AI agents. Instead of requiring every search to happen inside Clipto, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, and specialized agents can retrieve approved, source-backed context from a user's media library. Product extensions could include a developer SDK, paid connectors for additional agent platforms, per-agent permissions and audit logs, and task-specific agents for research, editing, sales, and recruiting.

A model-agnostic approach would allow users to change their preferred chatbot while keeping persistent memory and the source index in Clipto. As AI assistants require persistent, permissioned context to work across sessions, Clipto could operate as infrastructure for agent applications without building every agent interface itself.

Risks

Platform bundling: Adobe, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and major AI-assistant vendors can bundle natural-language media search, transcription, and summarization into editing suites, operating systems, and productivity software they control, potentially reducing Clipto's standalone product to a feature within products with larger installed bases and zero incremental acquisition cost.

Transcription commoditization: Falling model costs, with Mistral offering batch transcription at $0.003 per minute, MacWhisper selling lifetime local transcription for €64, and Wistia including transcription for free, mean Clipto's $150-per-year subscription must justify its price through persistent memory and cross-format retrieval rather than transcription accuracy, while slower adoption of the memory product would expose the subscription to price competition from near-free alternatives.

Local-compute constraints: Clipto's local-first architecture requires Apple-silicon Macs with at least 16GB of memory or Windows PCs with at least 12GB (Windows still in beta), narrowing the addressable device base, making indexing speed and resource consumption dependent on customer hardware rather than Clipto-controlled infrastructure, and creating onboarding friction for users with older or lower-spec machines.
