Integration Over Disruption For AI Scribes

Abridge is building a powerful attachment to Epic, not a replacement for it. The economic trade is simple, deeper integration gets Abridge into large health systems faster, but that same partnership makes it rational to expand into coding, prior auth, and clinical workflow around the EHR, instead of trying to unseat the system that controls clinician workflow, security review, and enterprise distribution.

In practice, the winning product is the one that finishes more of the visit. It does not just draft a note, it pulls chart context, fills structured fields, suggests codes, and places follow on tasks inside the EHR. That is why Epic development access matters more than having a slightly better standalone transcript.

The market is splitting by channel, not collapsing to one winner. Abridge used Epic and Athenahealth partnerships to grow from about 8,000 to more than 60,000 clinicians and roughly $100M ARR by May 2025, while PLG players like Freed grew with smaller practices that can buy a $99 per month tool without a big IT process.

That creates a clear boundary on disruption. Epic still owns the core record, scheduling, portal, and revenue system used by major hospitals, with estimated 2024 revenue of $5.7B. Abridge can become the default intelligence layer around the clinical conversation, but going directly after Epic's core modules would threaten the partnership that gives it its lead.
The next leg of value comes from owning more downstream work that starts with the conversation, especially inpatient documentation, coding, prior authorization, and other revenue cycle steps. The companies that win will look less like note taking tools and more like workflow routers inside incumbent EHRs, with the deepest partner ecosystems compounding fastest.
