The key shift is that cards stop being a single fintech product and become a hidden workflow button inside many kinds of software. That expands the market beyond neobanks, and it creates room for both broad BaaS platforms that bundle the stack and specialist issuers that plug into custom builds.

  • All-in-one platforms win when speed matters more than flexibility. They package the bank relationship, KYC, ledger, card issuing, and compliance workflows so a brand can launch quickly without stitching vendors together. That is especially attractive for enterprises and vertical SaaS companies treating finance as an add on, not the core product.
  • Point solutions win when the card itself needs to behave in a very specific way. Lithic positions here, handling network connectivity, transaction controls, card manufacturing, and processing while letting customers bring their own bank, ledger, or compliance tools. That fits companies adding second and third card products or tuning rules deeply around their workflow.
  • The economic pattern differs by customer type. Pure fintechs push volume hard because interchange is the business, which creates breakout winners but also concentration risk and fee pressure. Embedded finance customers usually use cards to reduce friction and increase retention, so volumes grow more steadily and revenue is spread across more programs.

Over time, more software companies will start with a narrow card use case, then layer on accounts, lending, and money movement around the same workflow.
