This was a supply chain opening, not just a pricing opening. When AWS and Azure could not get enough top tier Nvidia GPUs, or could not package them into the exact high speed clusters AI teams needed, companies like CoreWeave and Lambda won by being closer to Nvidia and more willing to build around customer specs. That let them turn scarce chips into fast revenue growth and a new position between hyperscalers and AI startups.1 2 3 4 5

  • CoreWeave became Nvidia’s friendly large scale reseller. By 2023 it was Nvidia’s 7th biggest customer, about 4.5% of Nvidia revenue, and used that chip access plus debt financing to expand rapidly. That is why CoreWeave could serve giant reserved clusters before most clouds could.1 2 5
  • Lambda used the same shortage differently. Instead of leading with public cloud breadth, it sold cheaper, more configurable training clusters. One customer comparing AWS, Oracle, CoreWeave, and Lambda found AWS could not meet the needed InfiniBand spec, while Lambda and CoreWeave could, and Lambda won on price.1 4
  • In practice the market split by workload. CoreWeave looked more like GPU flavored AWS, with Kubernetes, autoscaling, and production features for serving live models. Lambda looked more like a researcher cloud, where teams could reserve HGX style clusters, SSH in, run training jobs, and get engineering help customizing storage, networking, and security.1 3 4 5

The next phase is less about who can get any GPUs, and more about who can turn raw clusters into the default place to train and deploy serious AI systems. CoreWeave is pushing upmarket into enterprise and hyperscaler demand, while Lambda is moving from cheaper experimentation into larger reserved clusters and more polished developer tooling. The winners will be the clouds that pair Nvidia access with software that makes those GPUs easier to use every day.1 3 4 5
