This is a shift from front end distribution into the messy back office where private funds actually get serviced. Once a platform handles capital calls, distributions, and tax documents, it stops being just a place to buy alts and starts owning the daily operating workflow that keeps advisors, custodians, and clients in sync. That is exactly the layer where iCapital Manage has expanded, and where Addepar plus Northern Trust can now overlap with it.

  • iCapitals Manage module bundles the post trade jobs that advisors hate doing by hand, including capital call notices, distribution tracking, tax reporting, cash flow forecasting, and look through analytics. That makes servicing, not just fund access, a core revenue and retention layer for iCapital.
  • Addepar historically owned reporting, not transaction servicing. But its AltExchange integration already lets firms keep managing capital calls, distributions, and K-1 and 1099 document collection while syncing that alternatives data into Addepar. Adding Northern Trust pushes Addepar closer to a full operating system for alts workflows.
  • SEI is attacking the same seam from the opposite direction. After acquiring Altigo, SEI combined e-subscription, inventory, and reporting software with its existing custody and administration rails, then positioned SEI Access as an end to end alternatives platform for more than 250 wealth firms. That is the vertical integrator playbook in plain form.

The next phase of competition is around who owns the servicing rail after the investment is made. Platforms that combine advisor workflow software with custody, administration, or data infrastructure will keep pulling share from point solutions, because they can make alternatives feel less like special handling and more like a standard account operation inside wealth management.
