In practice, that means Coral can sit next to a bank’s existing Oracle setup, an AWS data estate, a Google Cloud deployment, or a locked down on prem cluster, while keeping prompts, outputs, and fine tuned models inside the customer environment. That matters most for regulated buyers, where deployment flexibility is often the difference between a pilot and a multi year contract.

This is tightly linked to Cohere’s business model. About 85% of revenue comes from private deployments, and those deals are sold as multi year enterprise contracts rather than pure usage based API spend. The product is not just a chatbot, it is an installable AI layer that works inside the customer’s existing security perimeter.

The contrast with OpenAI is less about model quality and more about procurement fit. Azure OpenAI gives enterprises strong controls inside Microsoft’s environment, while Cohere is built to run across public cloud, customer VPC, and on prem. That makes Cohere more attractive when the buyer already has mixed infrastructure or strict data residency rules.

Cohere has turned that flexibility into distribution. Oracle embeds Cohere models in its own products, and Dell packages Cohere North for on premises deployment. That means Cohere can reach customers through the vendors already managing their databases, ERP systems, and hardware, instead of asking them to rip and replace core infrastructure.
Going forward, cloud agnosticism pushes Cohere toward the sovereign and private AI segment of the market, where buyers care less about the flashiest consumer model and more about where the system runs, who can see the data, and how it plugs into existing systems. As enterprise AI spending matures, that deployment flexibility should keep pulling Cohere upmarket into larger, stickier infrastructure decisions.
