Experian matters because it is the only player in this set that can own the raw credit file, the consumer app, and the lender facing score in one stack. That lets it turn a free score check into a closed loop product where users monitor their file, add eligible rent and bill payments through Boost, dispute errors, and then see changes on the same Experian file many lenders already read through FICO Score 8. Credit Sesame has a useful layer on top, but it still sits on someone else’s rails.

Experian can bundle the core workflow without paying for bureau access from someone else. Its free product includes daily Experian report updates, FICO Score 8, credit monitoring alerts, online disputes, and Boost for eligible utility, telecom, streaming, and rent payments. That is a structural cost and product advantage, not just a branding advantage.

The score model matters because lender trust is uneven across consumer credit products. Credit Sesame’s free experience is built around TransUnion VantageScore 3.0, while many lenders still underwrite with FICO variants. Experian’s direct consumer surface shows FICO Score 8 from Experian data, which maps more closely to the score many borrowers think lenders will actually use.

TransUnion shows the upside and the risk of dependence on a bureau partner. In February 2025, TransUnion announced a freemium direct to consumer offering built with Credit Sesame’s platform, using Credit Sesame to power the product while keeping the consumer relationship and data ownership inside TransUnion. That validates Credit Sesame’s software value, but also shows how a bureau can keep the highest leverage layer for itself.
The market is moving toward tighter bureau control over the consumer credit journey. As rent and alternative payment data become more relevant in mortgage scoring, the companies that own the file and the score model touchpoint are in the best position to absorb standalone credit wellness features into a broader bureau owned app. That raises the bar for Credit Sesame to win through distribution, recommendations, and embedded platform partnerships.
