N26 Builds Wealth Management Stack
N26
This move matters because N26 is shifting from a bank that mainly earns on spending and deposits into one that can also earn on customer assets for years. The app already bundles current accounts with crypto through Bitpanda, stocks and ETFs through Upvest, tax advantaged PEA investing in France, and newer ready made fund savings plans. That is the basic stack for turning everyday banking users into long term investing customers inside one app.1 2 3 4 5 6
- The product design is built for distribution, not heavy traders. N26 lets users buy stocks and ETFs from as little as €1, routes orders through Upvest, and settles activity back into the main bank app. In France, N26 says 1 in 3 free trading wallets and 1 in 4 crypto wallets came from new customers, showing investing can also acquire users, not just monetize them.1 2 4 5
- The revenue logic is what makes robo advice the next obvious layer. Pure robo advisors like Betterment and Wealthfront historically charged about 25 basis points of AUM, and their business improved as they raised assets per customer. N26's roadmap for automated allocation and retirement wrappers follows that same playbook, but with a cheaper built in distribution channel because the banking relationship already exists.3 6 7
- The best near term comparable is Revolut. Its wealth unit, crypto plus stocks, was its fastest growing business in 2024 at $647M of revenue, up 298% YoY. That shows how quickly a neobank can turn investing from a side feature into a meaningful fee pool once enough users already keep money in the app.6 8
The next step is a fuller savings operating system inside N26, with automated portfolios, retirement wrappers, and more country specific tax products layered on top of the bank account. If that rollout works, N26 should capture more recurring fee revenue, hold customer cash longer, and make its app harder to replace with a standalone broker or a traditional bank.3 4 6
