COVID forced HR to equalize experience
Deel
COVID turned global payroll from a niche hiring tool into a product quality test for every HR team. Once everyone onboarded, signed contracts, checked payslips, and asked payroll questions through the same laptop screen, it became obvious when the worker in another country got a worse portal, slower pay flow, or no self serve tools. That pushed companies toward one system that handles W2s, contractors, and EOR workers with the same core workflow, which is the lane Deel moved into fastest.1 2 3 4 5
- Before this shift, many companies treated international hiring as an exception case. Startups wired contractors manually, while larger companies set up local entities country by country. Deel won by packaging compliant contracts, tax collection, and cross border payouts into one product, then extending that same product toward domestic payroll and one click global runs.1 2
- The real standard changed from can this company hire abroad to can every worker use the same clean system. Plane described the missing pieces in older tools as concrete UX gaps, no contractor account, no guided tax forms, weaker payslip access, and awkward wallet withdrawals. Equalizing those details is what made international tooling strategic instead of back office plumbing.3
- This is also why the market converged. Global players moved into domestic payroll, while domestic leaders and broader workforce platforms moved outward. Deel is now at an estimated $1.5B revenue run rate, versus about $300M for Remote and $1B for Rippling, showing how much value sits with the vendor that becomes the single system of record for a mixed global workforce.2 4 5
The next phase is less about remote work as a policy and more about payroll becoming borderless infrastructure. The winners will be the platforms that make location and worker type fade into the background, so an HR team can add a person in Texas, Toronto, or Lagos through nearly the same flow, then layer benefits, compliance, and financial services on top.1 3 4 5
