This partnership shows Forterra is trying to sell autonomy as a software layer on top of an incumbent vehicle maker, not as a whole truck company. Kalmar keeps control of the tractor, the drive by wire hardware, fleet management, sales, and service, while Forterra plugs in AutoDrive and related tools. That lets Forterra reach yard operators through an existing equipment channel instead of building its own manufacturing and dealer network.1 2 3 4 5

  • In practice, the split is very literal. Kalmar provides the Ottawa terminal tractor, factory built drive by wire controls, and Kalmar One fleet software. Forterra provides the autonomy stack that handles driverless moves through mixed yard traffic, like taking trailers from a parking row to a dock door or moving containers around a rail or port yard.2 3 4
  • The commercial wedge is distribution centers, ports, and railyards that already buy yard trucks from Kalmar. That matters because the budget owner is an operations team buying equipment to cut labor, improve throughput, and keep yards running 24 hours a day, not a defense buyer funding a bespoke vehicle program.1 5 6
  • The rollout is still early. Kalmar said in March 2024 that the companies had signed a joint development agreement. By April 2025 they had unveiled Ottawa AutoTT, and Kalmar now says pilots are underway with commercial availability targeted for 2027, which means the near term business is proving reliability and safety, not mass shipments yet.2 4 7

If AutoTT works, Forterra can repeat this model across more vehicle categories, where OEMs supply the metal, controls, and service footprint, and Forterra supplies the autonomy brain. That would push Forterra toward higher margin software and integration revenue, while making autonomy easier for industrial customers to buy as an upgrade to equipment they already trust.1 3 4 5
