Control of samples is the real choke point in conservation genomics. A biobank that already has decades of frozen cells, tissue, and reproductive material can now add sequencing and fertility partners without going through Colossal, which means the hardest asset to win is not genome analysis software or lab capacity, but permission to work on rare specimens that may exist in only a few freezers worldwide.

The Frozen Zoo already sits on one of the deepest wildlife sample collections in the field, with material from about 1,300 species gathered over 50 years. Its February 2026 Illumina deal covers up to 4,000 samples, so an incumbent biobank can bolt on large scale sequencing directly and keep custody of specimens and resulting data flows.

Nature’s SAFE shows the same pattern on the reproductive side. It works through zoo, rescue, and veterinary networks to collect tissue during routine procedures and after animal deaths, and it can pair storage with reproductive health work. That makes it a built in supplier of both samples and downstream breeding support, not just a freezer.

Colossal is responding by trying to build a broader collection network before incumbents lock up supply. Its U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service partnership aims to archive living cells, reproductive tissues, and genomic material for every ESA listed species, which is a scale play designed to secure access at the source rather than negotiate specimen by specimen later.
The market is heading toward bundled conservation stacks where the winning groups combine field collection, cryostorage, sequencing, reproductive science, and data access in one network. As more incumbent biobanks sign their own genomics and fertility partners, Colossal’s advantage will come from how fast BioVault becomes a default intake system for new endangered species samples, not from lab capabilities alone.
