The gap is less about driving demos and more about operating reality. Waymo already runs a public service where the car shows up empty in the front seat, completes paid trips, and hands edge cases to remote support without giving control back to a human in the vehicle. Tesla’s Austin launch started as a tightly limited service with a safety rider or safety monitor onboard, which means it was still testing a supervised product rather than operating a mature driverless network.

  • Waymo built its service around a Level 4 model in defined zones. Riders book in the app, unlock the car, and ride without a human driver up front. That matters operationally because removing the in car supervisor is the step that changes labor structure, vehicle utilization, and the customer experience from assisted autonomy to true robotaxi service.

Going forward, the market will reward the company that can turn autonomy into routine city operations, not just a compelling launch. Waymo is ahead because it has already crossed the labor and regulatory threshold into rider only service. Tesla’s path is to convert fleet data and supervised pilots into the same fully driverless standard, city by city.
