The real edge here is not vertical focus, it is whether the product can hold a clean, editable customer record as companies add more channels, more data sources, and more teams. Klaviyo started in ecommerce, but its core design, event tracking, profile building, and marketer friendly profile management, travels well to any workflow where a business needs to update a person record, segment that audience, and trigger messages from behavior rather than one off list uploads.

  • Klaviyo won ecommerce by bundling tracking, CRM, and automation into one system. A merchant drops in klaviyo.js, customer profiles fill automatically from site behavior, and marketers can build campaigns without asking engineering to rewrite pipelines. That same pattern works outside retail anywhere customer actions can be captured as events.
  • Customer.io is flexible in a different way. It lets technical teams stream app events, warehouse data, and API inputs into one user profile, then send those profiles to many downstream tools. That openness makes it strong for product led and mixed B2B or B2C use cases, but it also means it is not trying to be the whole CRM for every motion.
  • Twilio became threatening when Segment turned customer data into a portable layer. Once a company routes profiles and events through Segment, switching between messaging tools gets easier. That pushed vendors like Klaviyo and Customer.io to build their own CDP layers, because whoever controls the live customer profile gets the best shot at expansion across email, SMS, in app, and adjacent workflows.

This market keeps moving toward platforms that own the customer record and make it usable by both marketers and technical teams. The winners will be the products that can start in one strong vertical, then generalize without losing usability. That favors tools that turn raw events into a reliable profile system, not just tools that send messages.
