Workspace Ownership as AI Moat
RIP AI Slides 2022-2026
The real moat shifts from generating slides to owning the workspace the slide comes from. Microsoft and Canva can turn an existing doc, brand kit, folder, or team workspace into a first draft without making people move files, rebuild permissions, or restyle everything by hand. That matters because most business decks are not blank page creativity exercises, they are remixes of company material that already lives inside the suite.1 2 3
- In practice, context rich means the AI can pull from the source material already sitting nearby, like Word docs, Google Docs, Drive files, templates, and past decks. That removes the export and import loop that standalone tools like Gamma still have to bridge with imports and exports.1 3
- Brand aware and permissioned matter most in enterprise. Canva is building around editable structured templates, brand systems, and collaborative marketing workflows. Microsoft has the stronger position in regulated companies because the deck generator can sit next to sensitive SharePoint and Office data with existing access controls.2 3
- This is why Gamma had to differentiate on the medium, not just on AI. Its responsive card based format works more like a small website than a fixed slide, which helps it win on richer output and mobile viewing, even as bundled suites win the easier job of turning existing company content into standard decks.1 3
Going forward, bundled AI will absorb the routine deck making use case, especially inside large companies. The survivors are the products that either own the system of record, like Microsoft and Canva, or define a new output format, like Gamma, that feels better enough to justify leaving the default workflow.1 2 3
