Vector Premium Under Software Pressure

Diving deeper into

Quantum Systems

Company Report
the price premium commanded by Vector-class systems faces downward pressure from both the low end and the software layer

This pressure is really about where the profit pool in military drones ends up. Vector earns a premium today because it packages long endurance flight, encrypted links, AI compute, and field support into a turnkey ISR system, but cheaper FPV style aircraft are improving from below while software layers like MOSAIC and AuterionOS are trying to become the reusable control layer above any single airframe. If buyers can mix cheaper hardware with shared autonomy software, the hardware markup narrows fastest.1 2 3 4 5

  • Quantum has historically sold Vector in six figure system contracts, around €100k per system, then added service agreements. That works when the buyer values a proven aircraft bundle. It gets harder when a ministry can buy many more lower cost drones for the same budget and use them for reconnaissance, decoys, or one way missions.1 2 6
  • The software layer is becoming a direct battleground. MOSAIC is positioned as vendor independent mission software that can plan, connect, and command air, ground, and maritime systems. Rheinmetall and Auterion are building a standardized operating system with the same basic pitch, one architecture that can connect drones from different manufacturers.3 4 5
  • That is why the business model shift matters more than unit shipments alone. Quantum is explicitly pushing toward annual software licensing with higher gross margins, similar to how Anduril uses Lattice and Shield AI uses Hive. If the control software becomes sticky, Quantum can still capture economics even if the aircraft itself becomes more interchangeable.1 2 7 8

The next phase is a split between drone makers that remain premium hardware vendors and those that become operating systems for mixed fleets. Quantum is moving toward the second model. The faster MOSAIC becomes standard across allied procurement and multi vendor deployments, the better positioned Quantum is to defend margins even as airframes become harder to differentiate.2 3 4 5 7 8
