The fintech industry is seeing a trend of consolidation, with larger platforms acquiring smaller fintechs to leverage established customer bases and cross-sell financial products.

Consolidation is turning fintech from a customer acquisition game into a product bundling game. Once a platform already owns the customer relationship, it can add cards, lending, accounts, payroll, or BNPL inside the same app and spread sales and compliance costs across a larger base. That is why thin standalone fintechs get absorbed, while winners increasingly look like software or commerce platforms with financial products built in.

  • This showed up first in consumer fintech, where interchange only businesses pushed into broader product stacks. Chime was discussed as moving beyond debit driven revenue, and Brex and Ramp were cited as adding paid software subscriptions on top of cards and accounts, which makes each customer worth more over time.
  • The same pattern hit the infrastructure layer. The market built too many middleware and BaaS vendors for the number of durable fintech apps that actually needed them. That led to rollups by larger financial platforms, including Fifth Third acquiring Rize in 2023 and FIS acquiring Bond in 2023.
  • The practical advantage in these deals is distribution. A payroll platform, vertical SaaS tool, or seller platform does not need to persuade users to adopt a separate fintech brand. It can turn on embedded payments or banking inside an existing workflow, like invoicing, checkout, or worker payouts, and monetize the money already moving through the product.

The next phase is fewer pure play fintech brands and more incumbents, software companies, and vertical platforms packaging financial products into their core workflow. The companies that keep winning will be the ones with owned distribution or genuinely hard infrastructure, because those are the two places in fintech where pricing power and staying power are still strongest.
