Apptronik becomes Google hardware arm
Apptronik
The Google tie up turns Apptronik from a robot maker into a strategic hardware arm for a frontier AI lab. Google DeepMind is using Apollo as a humanoid testbed for Gemini Robotics, while Apptronik gets funding, model access, and shared data collection without being absorbed. That looks a lot like Amazon using Agility to push Digit into warehouse workflows while keeping the cap table, payroll, and factory risk outside Amazon.1 2 3 4 5
- This is more than a branding partnership. Google DeepMind said Gemini Robotics can be specialized to Apollo, and later showed Apollo in successive Gemini robotics releases, which implies an ongoing hardware and model co development loop rather than a one off demo.1 2 6 7
- Amazon followed the same playbook with Agility. Amazon said it would test Digit in operations and noted Agility was part of its Industrial Innovation Fund, giving Amazon a close development partner for warehouse humanoids without building a standalone humanoid company inside Amazon.4 8
- Apptronik is stacking multiple anchor partners around Apollo. Mercedes-Benz is testing Apollo for repetitive intralogistics work at its Berlin Digital Factory Campus and said it would make a low double digit million euro investment, showing the company can pair an AI partner, Google, with a deployment partner, Mercedes, on the same platform.5 9 10
The next phase is a small number of humanoid companies becoming preferred bodies for a small number of frontier model providers and industrial buyers. If Apptronik keeps Apollo as Google’s main humanoid proving ground while expanding sites like Mercedes and GXO, it can build a data and distribution moat that is hard for standalone robot startups to match.2 6 10
