Distributed Batteries Bypass Interconnection Queues

Base Power

Company Report
The company claims cost advantages over utility-scale battery farms by avoiding land acquisition and interconnection queues, though these claims are untested at large scale.

The real advantage is speed to deployed capacity, not proven cheaper energy storage. A utility scale battery farm usually needs land control, a large grid connection, and years of queue and study work before it can discharge at full scale. Base sidesteps much of that by placing smaller batteries on homes that already have service, then aggregating them into one dispatchable fleet. What remains unproven is whether thousands of scattered installs stay cheaper once coordination, maintenance, and customer acquisition are added.1 2 3 4

  • Utility scale projects do face a real queue problem. ERCOT reported that solar and storage make up most of the generation seeking interconnection, and completed projects in one ERCOT queue dataset took a median 3.7 years from interconnection request to online date. That makes Base’s behind the meter route strategically valuable even before any hardware cost comparison.3 4
  • Base is already monetizing the faster deployment angle through utility contracts. Austin Energy approved a 40 MW residential battery agreement with Base in May 2026, with installations ramping over about 18 months across roughly 2,000 to 2,500 homes. That is a concrete proof point that distributed storage can be procured as capacity without building a new standalone battery site.2 5 6
  • The hidden tradeoff is that distributed batteries replace one big project with thousands of small jobs. Base’s own model depends on low cost field operations, with truck crews placing units and electricians focused only on hookups. That can cut labor per install, but it also means scale depends on operational discipline, not just cheaper cells or avoided land costs.1 7

The next phase is a test of whether distributed storage becomes a repeatable utility procurement category or stays a niche workaround. If Base can keep signing contracts like Austin Energy while holding installation and service costs down, home batteries start to compete less with Tesla Powerwall as a consumer device and more with utility scale peaker and storage capacity as grid infrastructure.2 5 6 7
