Company Report
Despite growing competition from TikTok Shop's aggressive 6% commission rates, Whatnot's combination of entertainment and commerce continues to drive strong marketplace dynamics and revenue growth.

Whatnot is winning by making shopping feel like a show instead of a checkout page. TikTok Shop can charge less, but Whatnot gets people to stay longer, bid more often, and come back repeatedly, which matters more for seller earnings than a lower headline fee. That shows up in scale, with about $3B in 2024 GMV, $359M in 2024 revenue, and an effective take rate around 12.5% once ads and payments are included.1 2 3 4

  • The fee comparison is narrower than it looks. TikTok Shop charges a 6% referral fee on qualified U.S. orders, but sellers can also pay creator commissions, fulfillment costs, and other optional program fees. Whatnot charges 8% commission, payment processing, and now sells stream promotion, so its higher take rate comes with built in demand generation inside the app.2 3 5
  • Whatnot’s edge is that demand is native to the product experience. The app says sellers made $8B in 2025, and its seller tools center on livestreaming, promotion, loyalty, and repeat purchase analytics. Internally, average shoppers were buying 12 items per week, which helps explain why 62% of sellers remained exclusive despite TikTok Shop competition.1 4 5
  • TikTok Shop is much bigger globally, but U.S. live commerce is still early. ByteDance’s international TikTok Shop business did about $33B of GMV in 2024, yet only about $9B came from the U.S. while TikTok’s U.S. ads business was about $27B. That gap suggests shopping is still a secondary behavior on TikTok, while it is the core behavior on Whatnot.1 6

The next phase is a fight over whether live commerce becomes a feature inside giant social apps or a destination of its own. Whatnot’s expansion into beauty, electronics, jewelry, and fashion suggests its model can travel beyond collectibles, and if it keeps converting entertainment into repeat transactions, it can defend a premium take rate while growing into a broader marketplace.1 4 5
