Platform Assistants vs Independent Agents

The core risk is not that Apple or Google build a better standalone assistant, it is that they can make assistant behavior feel like a built in part of the phone and computer itself. Apple can expose app actions, personal context, and on screen awareness through Siri and App Intents across its devices, while Google can do similar work inside Gemini across Android and connected apps, which makes a separate assistant look like an extra permission layer rather than the default place where tasks happen.

Apple’s advantage is control of the operating system surface. It can let Siri see what is on screen, understand personal context, and trigger actions across apps through App Intents, so the user can stay inside system interfaces instead of handing another product broad screen and account access.

Google’s advantage is scale plus connected workflows. Google says Gemini has more than 1 billion monthly users and can automate actions across more than 40 apps, including tasks like booking rides and reserving tables, which overlaps directly with the errand and coordination jobs Instinct is trying to own.

That shifts the likely role of independents toward orchestration for edge cases. Instinct still reaches places platform assistants cannot, because it can watch screens, use credentials, click through messy websites, and span tools outside one ecosystem, but that looks more like a power user layer than a mass market default if Apple and Google keep widening native actions.
This market is heading toward a split. Platform assistants will absorb the common, low friction tasks that fit neatly into native apps and identity systems. Independent agents will win by being better at the ugly parts of real life, cross service coordination, broken workflows, and merchant neutral execution, where operating system bundling is less decisive.
