Prolific becomes core AI infrastructure
Prolific
This shift turned Prolific from a survey marketplace into core AI infrastructure. Instead of mostly helping academics find respondents for studies, it now helps AI labs and AI software companies find specific humans, wire them into model workflows through APIs, and collect judgments on safety, behavior, cultural fit, and output quality. That matters because these jobs carry higher spend, recur more often, and reward Prolific’s deepest advantage, a large, profiled participant base with fast matching and verification.1 2 3
- The workflow changed from one off studies to always on model operations. Frontier labs use Prolific for red teaming, safety evals, post training work, and validation. AI B2B companies use it for product testing and localization. The company says customers can launch tasks self serve or connect by API and get results in hours or minutes.1
- The supply side changed too. Academic research mostly needs broad respondent pools. AI evaluation increasingly needs narrower groups, like linguists, doctors, teachers, STEM graduates, multilingual users, or people screened for traits like temperament and resilience. Prolific built years of participant history, verified skills, and audience filters that let buyers target those cohorts without starting from scratch.1 2
- This is a broader pattern across human data. Handshake repurposed its student network into AI labeling and reached a Sacra estimated $1.1B annualized gross revenue in April 2026. Invisible grew RLHF work by combining software orchestration with a managed workforce. Prolific differs by leaning harder into self serve speed, transparent participant pricing, and deeply profiled non commodity human supply.2 3 4
The next step is for human data vendors to move further from raw labeling into continuous evaluation and benchmarking. Prolific is well positioned because model builders increasingly need the same thing after training, a fast way to call up the right humans, test behavior in real conditions, and keep models aligned across languages, cultures, and use cases.1
