Marvell Consolidation Pressures Merchant Optics

Company Report
This strategy exerts downward pressure on merchant optics pricing by consolidating the optical chain within Marvell's ecosystem.

Marvell is trying to turn optics from a multi vendor bill of materials into a mostly Marvell controlled subsystem. When the same vendor supplies the DSP path, the linear driver, the TIA, and the silicon photonics engine, the module maker does less custom integration work and buys fewer high margin parts from separate merchants. That shifts pricing power away from standalone optics suppliers and toward the chip vendor that owns the full electrical to optical stack.

  • Marvell’s 1.6T light engine packages the linear driver, TIA, silicon photonics die, microcontroller, and firmware together for 200G per lane links. In practice, that means a module vendor can start from a near complete optical core instead of sourcing and tuning each piece separately, which compresses room for merchant component markups.
  • Intel shows the clearest precedent for this model. It says it has shipped more than 8 million silicon photonics PICs with over 32 million on chip lasers, and now promotes fully integrated optical I/O chiplets co packaged with CPUs. Once optics are bundled with the compute or switch platform, third party suppliers have less leverage.
  • For an open platform like OpenLight, the opening is different. It sells a process design kit, reference PIC designs, and production access through foundry partners, so customers can build their own transceivers and optical engines without depending on a single systems vendor. That matters most for module makers and hyperscalers that want supply chain choice.

The next phase is a split market. Large platform vendors will keep pulling optics inside their own switch, NIC, and compute ecosystems, while independent platforms win where customers want a reusable design kit, foundry portability, and control over the final module design. As link speeds move from 1.6T to 3.2T, that independence becomes more valuable, not less.
